SHINZIG is a grade one winning sprinter/miler bred on the Danehill/Mr. Prospector cross that also produced Flying Spur.
Shinzig is free of two of the Australian broodmare sire lines that have done particularly well with Danehill: Sir Tristram and Star Kingdom. Among the sources of Sir Tristram that could be considered are Zabeel (and his son, Octagonal, and grandson, Lonhro), Kaapstad, Sovereign Red, Military Plume, Marauding (who has show a particular affinity for Flying Spur), Grosvenor, Dr. Grace, El Qahira and Islero.
Star Kingdom can be brought in through Biscay, particularly through Bletchingly – who does very well with the similarly-bred Flying Spur – and his sons Canny Lad, Best Western and Star Watch, and grandson Hurricane Sky – and through Marscay, the sire of a stakes winner out of Shinzig’s second dam); Kaoru Star (via Luskin Star and his son Covetous); Nodouble (through Semipalatinsk); Zephyr Bay and Planet Kingdom.
Other Australian strains that have worked well under Danehill are Crown Jester and Rory’s Jester; Century through Centaine and Rubiton; Zedative; and Vain.
Danehill is a Northern Dancer line horse, but he and his sons have enjoyed success when crossed back over mares from certain branches of that line, including Nijinsky II (through Caerleon, Royal Academy, and Whiskey Road); The Minstrel who can be brought in through Palace Music (sire of Naturalism), Bakharoff, Chem and Masterclass; Nureyev (who can be found in Australia through Spinning World, Ashkalani, Fasliyev and Peintre Celebre); Try My Best and his son Last Tycoon; Sadler’s Wells (available in Australia through Scenic), and his sons Blevic, Barathea, Galileo, Montjeu, Carnegie, King of Kings and Singspiel) and his brother Fairy King (sire of Encosta De Lago, who is out of a half-sister to Flying Spur), who look particularly promising here; Storm Bird, through Bluebird and Storm Cat (sire of Hennessy, Catrail, Tale of the Cat and Giant’s Causeway), Dehere and Be My Guest.
As mentioned, Shinzig is an example of the very successful cross of Danehill over mares descending from Mr. Prospector. We can note that there are already four stakes winners from the sire line of the similarly-bred Flying Spur out of Mr. Prospector line mares, so breeding back over mares from this line looks well worth considering. Potential sources of Mr. Prospector include Woodman (who is sire of a group winner out of the granddam of Shinzig, and whose sons, Hector Protector and Woodborough, are broodmare sires of Flying Spur line stakes winners), Bellotto (broodmare sire of a Flying Spur stakes winner), Miswaki, Gone West (and his son, Zafonic), and Machiavellian (sire of Street Cry).
Additional broodmare sire lines that have done well under Danehill include Blushing Groom, who might be brought in through Rahy (sire of Fantastic Light and Noverre), Nassipour, Quest For Fame and Sharpen Up, who is available through Famous Star, Daggers Drawn (by Diesis), College Chapel (by Sharpo), Keen and Switch in Time, and it is also worth considering mares descending from Halo through More Than Ready and Don’t Say Halo.
