GOD’S OWN was always destined to capture the imagination of broodmare owners when he retired to stud in 2006.
God’s Own certainly produced his own miracle in the Caulfield Guineas-G1 when, after being knocked from pillar to post, took out was arguably the most thrilling victory in the race’s 127 year history. And it’s definitely a race won by ‘breed shapers’ including God’s Own’s own sire, Redoute’s Choice, along with Grosvenor, Sovereign Red, Luskin Star,
Vain and company.
God’s Own would also run Takeover Target to a whisker in the Lightning Stakes, leaving Stratum, Snitzel, Undoubtedly, Jet Spur, Rewaaya and Media in his wake. The Lightning too has struck many times in the ‘stallion stakes’ with Century, Zeditave, General Nediym and Testa Rossa among winners of this time honoured Group One sprint.
Winning on debut at 2, God’s Own was only once out of the money throughout his career and he is closely related to Horse of the Year, Saintly, Champion Taj Rossi, plus Golden Slipper winners Storm Queen and Dark Eclipse. Given his athleticism, impeccable breeding and ability to sprint with the elite and outpoint his peers over a ‘mile’, God’s Own has attracted over 340 mares in his first two seasons at stud. Following up “the best book of mares ever for a VIctorian freshman”, year two was no less flattering with bookings to Group One winners Northwood Plume, Love To Dance and co., along with the dams of Hollow Bullet, Landsighting, Testifiable … the list goes on.
So too the legend. |
