Clangalang is one of the most accomplished Mr. Prospector line horses to race in Australia, completing the unique AJC Derby (gr. I) – Epsom Handicap (gr. I) double.
Clangalang is sire of graded stakes winner Geegees Blackflash, who is out of a mare by Grand Lodge. He is by Chief’s Crown, who is from the Northern Dancer line, and by Danzig out of a mare by Secretariat (whose half-brother, Sir Gaylord, is in the pedigree of Clangalang). Other sons of Chief’s Crown include Be My Chief, Beautiful Crown and Istidaad. The Danzig/Sir Ivor cross through Green Desert (sire of Cape Cross, Desert Sun, Invincible Spirit, Kheleyf, Lacryma Cristi, Magic Ring, Shinko Forest and Volksraad) is also likely to work well here. Clangalang should also be suited by mares by Danehill and sons, such as Flying Spur (giving inbreeding to Mr. Prospector), Redoute’s Choice, Commands, Danewin, Rock of Gibraltar, Danzero, Exceed and Excel, Catbird and Fastnet Rock. Danzig through Perugino and his son, Testa Rossa, might also be good.
The success with Grand Lodge suggests that Clangalang might work well over mares by other Northern Dancer/Secretariat crosses, such as Dehere and Storm Cat (available through Tale of the Cat - who gives a double of Mr. Prospector - Giant’s Causeway, Hennessy, Johannesburg, High Yield, Catrail, and Van Nistelrooy). Clangalang’s sire, Clang, and grandsire, Bellotto, have a very good strike-rate with mares from the Northern Dancer line in general. The success rate with the Nijinsky II branch has been particularly high, and he can be brought in through Caerleon (sire of Bletchley Park), Copper Kingdom, Western Symphony, Whiskey Road and Yeats (broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Bellotto). Bellotto and Clang have also sired stakes winners out of mares by the Northern Dancer line stallions Prego and his sire Be My Guest (also sire of Pentire, Raami, and What a Guest), Danzatore, Vice Regent (sire of Archregent, New Regent and Regal Classic), and Distinctly North. Clangalang’s pedigree suggests that he might also be well suited by mares descending from Northern Dancer through Sadler’s Wells (who can be brought in through Scenic – sire of Blevic – Galileo, Montjeu, High Chaparral, Barathea, Carnegie, King of Kings and Singspiel), and his brother Fairy King (sire of Encosta de Lago and Helissio).
Linebreeding to Sir Gaylord through his sons Habitat and Sir Ivor has often been effective, and Bellotto sired three stakes winners out of mares descending from Sir Ivor through Sir Tristram (out of mares by Sir Tristram himself, Sovereign Red and Grosvenor). Sir Tristram might also be introduced through Zabeel (as well as his son Octagonal, and grandson, Lonhro), Westminster, Marauding, El Qahira, Islero, Dalmacia, Dr. Grace, Kaapstad, and Military Plume. Sir Gaylord is from the Turn-to line, and that line may also prove to be beneficial here through Don’t Say Halo, and through the Roberto line, particularly via Brocco and Prized, and also through Red Ransom, At Talaq and Touching Wood.
Clangalang’s sire, Clang, sired Champion Two-Year-Old Filly, Calaway Gal, out of a mare by Captain’s Gold, a son of Riverman, and this strain – available through Brief Truce, Loup Sauvage, and Rivotious – might work well here. Century has a somewhat similar background to Riverman’s sire, Never Bend, and from this line there is a grade one winner by Bellotto out of a mare by Centaine, and a graded winner by Bellotto out of a mare by Rubiton. Century could also be introduced through Centro, Double Century, Euclase, and Kinjite.
It is becoming harder to find Star Kingdom line mares, but the Bellotto line has crossed tremendously well with Star Kingdom, the direct cross yielding 13 stakes winners. The branches that have been successful are Kaoru Star (through Luskin Star, who would be doubled here, Aurealis, Full On Aces and Kings High); Biscay (through Marscay, and Zephyr Bay/ Black Zephyr); Todman (who would be doubled here, through Imposing, and Zvornik /Todvega); Planet Kingdom (through Mighty Kingdom); and Noholme II. A brother to Todman, Noholme II, looks especially interesting here, particularly through Semipalatinsk, and he might also be brought in through such as Forest Glow, Green Line Express, Made of Gold and Zabaleta.
