SPIRIT DRIFTS TO DESERVED VICTORY As we all know, racehorses can be frustrating beasts at the worst of times and a trip to heaven at the best. Matty Ellerton’s Drifting Spirit – bred by RV8 Thoroughbreds and out of the Xaar mare Get Around – had owners scratching their heads following five placings from seven starts, but after his previous start in December, underwent a throat operation. It appears to have worked with the Bel Esprit 3YO getting up at Ballarat on Thursday (25 June) to record his maiden victory and Team Ellerton reckon it won’t be his last. You can watch the race by clicking here Drifting Spirit was Bel Esprit’s 190th winner (on his way to 200 by the end of July!). Sold at the 2007 Melbourne Premier for $60,000, Drifiting Spirit is a grandson of Group One winning Bletchingly mare, Wrap Around, a half sister to multiple Group Two winner Rose of Danehill and closely related to dual Group One winner Fashions Afield. |
