MAGNUS LEADS NATIONAL AVERAGES Magnus is already off to a flying start at stud – even before he has a foal on the ground. Retiring to Eliza Park last spring, following a career which resulted in the son of Flying Spur winning and/or placing in 10 Group One events, Magnus was well supported with a book of outstanding broodmares. Well, a few of those expectant mums made their way to the Gold Coast this week and were very well received by a discerning buying bench, catapulting Magnus to the top of the first season table with an average of $59,000. While it comes as no surprise to his many admirers, there was considerable opposition on the Coast from peers who had also retired to stud in 2008. But Magnus came up trumps and, with a reduced service fee this season ($22,500), is clearly tremendous value for money.
