STALLION PROFILE - GOD'S OWN

Some races just live on in your memory. The 1999 Caulfield Guineas is a case in point. So is the 2005 Caulfield Guineas.

The first was won by Redoute’s Choice in an epic head bobber, while the latter was taken out in miraculous fashion by his exciting son God’s Own.

Subsequent to his Guineas victory, Redoute’s Choice has reached stratospheric heights as a stallion – winning multiple titles and legendary status.

God’s Own? He’s the lad in waiting. Hanging up his racing plates following a 3YO campaign which included a whisker second to Takeover Target in the Lightning Stakes-G1, God’s Own received monumental support after arriving at Eliza Park, covering 542 mares in his first three seasons at stud.

Outstanding mares too: Scandinavia (dam of Magnus and Wilander), Drop Anchor (dam of 2009 Group One winner Bel Mer), Success Tale (dam of Wonderful World), Group One winners Hollow Bullet, Northwood Plume, Miss Pennymoney and Love to Dance, Myrrh (dam of 2008 Doncaster Handicap winner Triple Honour), Lovers Knot (dam of 2008 Melbourne Cup winner Viewed), Space Talk (dam of 2009 VRC Sires’ Produce-G2 winner Rostova), Millrich (Group winning dam of Danerich), Aerate’s Pick (dam of this season’s multiple stakeswinner Ortensia) and Aperto (dam of Group One winner Jymcarew) … just to tip the iceberg.

The first crop of foals (and the second) received rave reports, culminating in a dream debut at 2009 yearling sales, selling up to $300,000 and finding new homes in the nation’s leading stables.

Gai Waterhouse has several to work with, while other buyers included Shadwell Australia, Bart and Anthony Cummings, David Hayes, Mick Price, Clarry Conners, Robbie Griffiths, Matt Ellerton, Sheila Laxon, Tony Noonan and Gillian Heinrich.

Such was the impact buyers are now pinning hopes on imminent arrivals as God’s Own topped the averages for covering sires at the recent Great Southern Bloodstock Sale with mares in foal to him selling for $100,000.

Now the waiting game commences.

But we’re confident – and here’s why.

God’s Own won at two. He won the Caulfield Guineas in one of the most tenacious fightbacks in turf history and was just beaten by a world champion in our nation’s premier sprint (both the Guineas and Lightning are arguably our two greatest ‘breed shapers’).

He’s a son of our No. 1 stallion whose popularity as a sire of sires is now nearing that of his own legendary sire in Danehill.

As for God’s Own pedigree, he’s out of a three sister to Horse of the Year, Saintly, and hails from the immediate family of another Horse of the Year in Taj Rossi, plus Golden Slipper winners Dark Eclipse and Storm Queen.

Last, but certainly not least, God’s Own is an outstanding individual and, based on his first two crops, is clearly colour dominant like his sire and grandsire.

Pedigree, performance, physique and he throws them to type.

Helps to have the right ammunition!

God’s Own will stand the 2009 season at a fee of $33,000 inc. GST with a Free Return.
