| AN EYE ON ASIA WITH LYLE PLUMB
Mooring continued the hot run for Bel Esprit at Kranji, scorching the turf or, in this case, the polytrack in his victory last Friday (20 March) night. The Michael Freedman trained galloper stopped the clock just over 0.5 seconds outside the course record, heralding a tremendous 24 hours for Bel Esprit when Mooring’s full sister Bel Mer took out the Group One Robert Sangster Stakes in Adelaide. This was Mooring’s second straight victory in March, and the stable holds high hopes that he can continue to climb through the classes. Newfoundluck, a son of Storm Cat stallion Tabkir and brother to 5-time South Aussie winner Rikbat, showed he is close to a win, when he was runner up in his maiden on 13 March. Bred and formerly owned by Eliza Park, Newfoundluck is a tremendous example of the type of money available in Singapore, by taking his total earnings to over $31,000 from two seconds and a third. He was sent to Singapore by Eliza Park with an option to purchase, which was exercised before his most recent start: a timely reminder to clients that it’s easy to sell horses if you bring them to the market. We wish Newfoundluck’s new connections all the best and feel certain he will repay his purchase price many times over. Eliza Park is increasing its number of representatives in Singapore with most of our sires having lots of exposure, which is just the way you want it in this rapidly expanding market. Importantly, there has been a change in import conditions for Singapore with pre-export quarantine no longer required. This means horses are able to stay in full work right up to the time they leave Australia and can start racing much sooner upon arrival in Singapore.
