| STATUES LIBERATE P2
While the main topic of conversation might have focused on the economic state of play, there was one name that broke through the gloom at Oaklands Junction this week. Statue of Liberty is clearly one of the most exciting stallions to stand in Victoria – in Australia – this season. He was the talk of the Premier and talk quickly turned to walk with the Statue of Liberty colt from Weekend Surprise fetching the second the third highest price of the opening session when knocked down to Mick Price for $150,000. It’s little wonder that the sole Statue of Liberty offering in the Premier I section was so keenly sought, particularly as Greg Eurell’s unbeaten ‘flyer’ Mic Mac took out the Hobartville Stakes-G2 in Sydney some 24 hours earlier. Mic Mac became Statue of Liberty’s fifth stakeswinner and joins the likes of Tempest Tost and Melbourne Group winner, Dan Baroness – a full sister to Mick Price’s new addition. Fittingly, Statue of Liberty would top the Premier II session yesterday when, first, his filly from Group Two winner Golden Prayer was snapped by Chris Parry for $70,000, before his colt from Orpen mare Orpenella topped the male section when sold for $52,500. Hoofnote: The Statue of Liberty colt from Weekend Surprise will beat his sire to Eliza Park, joining over 100 other breakers in our Pre-Training and Breaking In division. General Manager Racing, Sue Ellis, reports that business has been brisk and the division has been again supported by leading trainers such as Mick Price, Gai Waterhouse, Michael Moroney and Ross and Clinton McDonald, who had Weekend Hussler broken in at Eliza Park following the 2006 Melbourne Premier.
